How does Email Hunter work under the hood?

The way Email Hunter works is quite simple.

We noticed that a very common way to find email addresses among sales people and recruiters was to Google it.

  • If you were lucky, you found the precise email you were looking for.
  • In many cases you found at least one personal email address, could figure out the pattern used (for example first.last@company.com) and finally guess the email address you were looking for.
  • But in many cases too, you lost precious time finding nothing.

The problem is that Google is not conceived to search email addresses, even with advanced operators.

Finding email addresses with Email Hunter follows the same process but takes only a few seconds. Like Google, we crawl the entire web and index (almost) all publicly available email addresses.

If you use our Chrome extension to find email addresses on LinkedIn, all the steps are automated:

  1. We search the website of the company the person is currently working for.
  2. We search all the email addresses we have in our base using the same domain name (i.e. all email addresses with @company.com)
  3. Depending on what we get, Email Hunter automatically finds the most likely email pattern used in the company. If we don't have enough data, we just return the few email addresses we found for the investigated company and let the user judge what can be used.

To give more accurate results, we also use SMTP checks to test the deliverability and score the quality of sources (pages where email addresses are displayed on the web).

I hope Email Hunter looks a bit less like black magic now :)
